Nothing seems as sad as a clown. Originally a staged photograph from London street life by the Scottish artist John Thomson. John used the ‘Woodburytype’ process, a type of photomechanical reproduction using pigmented gelatin. This process, however complicated, remained popular until about 1900 because of it’s high quality and permanence of the finished images.
